Adishi — A High-Mountain Legend of Svaneti

In Upper Svaneti, within the Mestia Municipality, at an elevation of 2040 meters above sea level, lies the village of Adishi. Situated 27 kilometers from Mestia, this settlement is one of the highest and most isolated villages in Georgia. Adishi is not just a geographical point; it is a living museum where time seems to have stopped in the Middle Ages.

Historical Heritage and Culture

Adishi holds a special place in Georgian culture. It was here that the "Adishi Gospels" (AD 897)—one of the oldest and most important monuments of Georgian literature—was preserved for centuries.

  • Medieval Churches — There are several historical churches in the village: the Church of the Deliverer (10th-11th centuries), two churches of St. George (12th century), and the Church of the Archangel (12th century). Each of them stands out with unique frescoes and architecture.
  • Svanetian Towers — Adishi is famous for its numerous Svanetian towers, which are an integral part of the village landscape and make visitors feel the majesty of the past.

Nature and Geography

Adishi is located in the Adishischala river gorge. The local nature is breathtaking—snowy peaks of the Caucasus, alpine meadows, and crystal-clear air. The village is a popular stop on the Mestia-Ushguli hiking route. The Adishi Glacier, located near the village, is one of the most beautiful sights in the region.

Local Lifestyle

Today, only a few dozen people live in Adishi. The population carefully preserves Svanetian traditions, language, and customs. The hospitality here is special—a guest is considered a family member. A visit to Adishi is a chance to feel the true spirit of Svaneti, taste local dishes, and enjoy the tranquility that only proximity to mountain peaks can provide.
