Achi — A Historical Gem of Guria on the Meskheti Slopes

In the Guria region, within the Ozurgeti Municipality, on the northern slope of the Meskheti Range, lies the village of Achi in the Achistsqali river gorge. Situated at an elevation of 420 meters above sea level, this small but history-rich settlement is just 9 kilometers from Ozurgeti. Achi is not just a place of beautiful nature; it is one of the most important centers of Guria's spiritual and cultural heritage.

Historical Heritage and Achi Church

The main pride and attraction of the village is the St. George Church of Achi. This hall-type church was built at the turn of the 13th-14th centuries and is a brilliant example of Georgian architecture.

  • Achi Church — The church is famous for its unique frescoes that have survived for centuries. A gold-plated silver cross, which according to legend dates back to the era of Queen Tamar, was preserved in the church. Historically, the church was under the special protection of the Princes of Guria—the Gurielis.
  • Fortress Ruins — Remains of an old fortress are also preserved on the village territory, indicating Achi's strategic importance in the Middle Ages.

Nature and Geography

The landscape of Achi is a typical Gurian panorama—slopes immersed in greenery, the coolness of the Achistsqali River, and fresh mountain air. The surroundings of the village are ideal for ecotourism, hiking, and photography. The river gorge and waterfalls leave visitors with a sense of peace and closeness to nature.

Local Lifestyle

Today, Achi is one of the least populated villages, with about 40 people living here. Despite the small population, the village maintains its authentic character. The locals are known for their Gurian hospitality and humor. A visit to Achi is a chance to immerse yourself in history, enjoy the nature of Guria, and feel the eternal peace that prevails in this ancient church and village.
