Abisi — A Historic Fortress on the Banks of the Lopanistsqali

In the Shida Kartli region, within the Kareli Municipality, the village of Abisi is built on the right bank of the Lopanistsqali River. Situated at an elevation of 670 meters above sea level, this settlement is 15 kilometers away from the town of Kareli. Abisi is not just an ordinary village; it serves as a community center and preserves significant fragments of the complex and fascinating history of Shida Kartli.

Historical Upheavals

Abisi is first mentioned in historical documents in 1633 as an estate belonging to the Avalishvili noble family. The village's location determined its harsh fate—in the 1720s and 1730s, it was devastated twice by marauding bands of Dagestani feudal lords.

Interestingly, in 1779, King Erekle II resolved a dispute over the ownership of Abisi in favor of Glakha Makhviladze. The village is also known for peasant resistance—in April 1858, the peasants of Abisi refused to pay monetary and in-kind taxes, a clear example of the social tensions of that era.

• Abisi Fortress-Hall — Built in the second half of the 18th century, this fortification is the main pride of the village. Despite the toll of time, the walls and towers of the fortress still look impressive and introduce visitors to the peculiarities of defensive architecture from a bygone era.
• St. Marine Church — Dating back to the 10th-11th centuries, this shrine is the spiritual center of the village. Its ancient architecture and location create an ideal environment for peace and reflection.

Today, about 400 people live in Abisi. The village maintains its traditional Kartlian character and hospitality.
