Abano — A Mineral Oasis in the Lopanistsqali Gorge

Hidden in the heart of Shida Kartli, within the Kareli Municipality, lies the village of Abano, nestled in the picturesque Lopanistsqali river gorge. Situated at an elevation of 720 meters above sea level and 27 kilometers from the town of Kareli, this settlement offers visitors the tranquility of nature and a healing climate. The name "Abano" (meaning "bath" in Georgian) is no coincidence—it directly points to the natural wealth this place has boasted for centuries.

Historical Roots and Architecture

The history of Abano and the broader Truso gorge dates back to the Middle Ages. Fragments of ancient residential and defensive structures from the 17th and 18th centuries still survive in the village. According to historical sources, a new wave of population settled here in the mid-17th century, giving fresh impetus to the village's cultural and economic development. Strolling through the old neighborhoods, travelers can clearly see traces of historic Georgian architecture blending harmoniously with the foothill landscape.

Resort Potential and Natural Wealth

The main attraction of Abano is its natural resources. In 2005, the village and its surrounding area (Agaraki-Abano) were officially granted the status of a resort zone.

  • Sulfuric Waters — The village is rich in low-mineralization, hydrogen sulfide mineral springs, which locals have used for healing purposes since time immemorial.
  • Lopanistsqali Gorge — The forest massifs spread along the river and the fresh mountain air create ideal conditions for ecotourism and relaxation in nature.

Local Lifestyle

Today, about 240 people live in Abano. Despite its small population, the village maintains its vitality and traditional Kartlian hospitality. Visitors can taste local, ecologically clean products and experience the quiet, unhurried rhythm of a Shida Kartli village. Abano is an ideal destination for those escaping the noise of the city in search of natural therapy.
