Zogishi Church Ruins

Duration: 1–3 hours

Tucked away in the highlands of the Racha region, the ruins of the Zogishi Virgin Mary Church serve as a silent testament to the spiritual history of the Oni municipality. Reaching this site offers a glimpse into a time when remote mountain communities relied on such structures as the center of their social and religious life.

Historical Context and Architecture

The site is classified as a 'naeklesiari'—a term used for the ruins of a church. It follows the classic single-nave layout typical of medieval Georgian mountain architecture. Local limestone and slate were the primary building materials, chosen for their availability and durability in the harsh mountain climate. While the roof has long since collapsed and only the foundations and lower wall segments remain, the masonry indicates a high level of craftsmanship. It is a quiet place where one can observe the original construction techniques used in this high-altitude landscape.

Practical Information for Visitors

Zogishi is located in the Oni municipality. To reach the ruins, a 4x4 vehicle is strongly recommended, though part of the journey may require a short hike depending on the trail condition. Plan for about 1-3 hours to explore the site and enjoy the panoramic views of the valley. There is no infrastructure here, so bring water, snacks, and sturdy footwear. The most favorable time to visit is from late May to early October, when the paths are clear of snow.

Nearby Attractions

For those spending time in the area, the Oni Regional Museum is an essential stop to understand the broader archaeological context of Racha. The nearby villages of Glola and Gebi are also worth exploring; they provide an authentic look at traditional Racha architecture and are famous for their natural mineral springs. The confluence of the Rioni River and its tributaries nearby offers excellent spots for nature photography and moments of peace.
