Zinobiani Lake

Zinobiani Lake functions as a serene natural reservoir positioned in the Kvareli Municipality, within the wider geographic expanse of the Alazani Valley. Located immediately near the historic settlement of Zinobiani (officially registered as Udabno), this body of water mirrors the tranquil atmosphere of the outer Kakheti farmlands. Beyond its hydrological role for the local micro-region, the lake stands as a geographical landmark for an area deeply tied to one of the most distinctive cultural migrations in the modern history of the South Caucasus.

The Settlement History and Udi Heritage

The modern story of the landscape surrounding Zinobiani Lake began in the early 1920s. The nearby village was established by Udi refugees who migrated from the village of Vartashen in Azerbaijan, led by the prominent intellectual Zinobi Silikashvili. The Udi people represent an ancient ethnic minority group directly descended from the historical population of Caucasian Albania. Seeking a new homeland where they could maintain their Orthodox Christian faith and distinct language, they settled in this section of the Kakheti region.

During the Soviet period, state authorities renamed the village Udabno, but the local community persistently preserved its heritage. The lake and its surroundings became an essential part of the village's agricultural and daily life. The regional geography features a combination of alluvial plains and distant views of the Caucasus foothills, creating a distinct microclimate. Today, the location serves as an important cultural touchpoint, illustrating how the Udi community has maintained its unique linguistic identity and customs within the broader framework of Georgian history.
