Vejini Natlismtsemeli Church

The Vejini Natlismtsemeli (St. John the Baptist) Church stands on a wooded hillside in the Gurjaani Municipality, representing the resilience of the Kakheti region. Built during the late medieval period, this structure functioned as both a spiritual center and a fortified stronghold for the local population of the Alazani Valley against continuous external invasions.

The Defensive Outpost

The church is an essential component of the larger Vejini fortress and monastic complex. Surrounding the main religious buildings are the remains of ancient stone walls and defensive towers. During times of conflict, these fortifications provided a secure refuge for villagers. Walking around the perimeter, you can clearly see how the steep, rugged terrain was utilized to maximize the defensive capabilities of the site.

The Drive and Trail Approach

Reaching the complex involves driving through the main village of Vejini. The roads leading up to the village are generally paved and suitable for standard vehicles. However, the final ascent to the church complex requires parking your car and hiking up a moderately steep, unpaved trail. The walk takes you through dense forest, requiring sturdy footwear, especially after rain when the path can become muddy. The ascent offers excellent vantage points of the Alazani Valley below. Ensure you wear modest clothing, keeping shoulders and knees covered, as this remains an active site of reverence.
