Vejini Gurgval Church

The Gurgval Sakdari (Round Church) stands in the historic village of Vejini within the Gurjaani Municipality. Unlike the larger monastery complexes in the Alazani Valley, this medieval structure is a quiet, weathered monument reflecting the spiritual and community life of historical Kakheti. Medieval Architecture and Construction

Built during the Middle Ages, the structure is a distinct single-nave hall church featuring a prominent semi-circular apse that gives it its descriptive local name, "Gurgvali" (Round). The builders utilized local river cobblestones bound with strong lime mortar, interspersed with traditional Georgian flat bricks to reinforce the corners and window arches. This material combination is characteristic of the Kakhetian building school, which favored practical, locally sourced materials capable of enduring regional seismic activity.

Internal Features and Cultural Layer

Inside the church, the surviving architectural elements reveal details of medieval liturgy. The small windows let in narrow beams of natural light, illuminating the sanctuary.
