Uzungöl Lake

Uzungöl, translated as Long Lake, is a natural formation located in the Çaykara district of Trabzon Province, Turkey. Situated in a deep valley surrounded by dense forests and steep mountain slopes, this lake was created by a significant landslide that blocked the course of the Haldizen Stream. Sitting at an altitude of approximately 1,090 meters, it serves as a classic example of a dammed valley lake, defined by its emerald waters and quiet mountain isolation.

The Natural Formation of Uzungöl

The lake’s distinct shape and deep color are results of geological activity in the Eastern Black Sea mountains. The block of the river created a sediment basin that allows for the preservation of its deep green hue. Unlike alpine lakes fed solely by glaciers, this basin relies on a complex hydrographic system that fluctuates with the snowmelt of the surrounding heights.

Architecture and Cultural Heritage

The region is characterized by traditional wooden architecture, a stylistic response to the damp climate and the availability of local timber. Historically, the inhabitants of this valley developed a pastoral life centered around the high plateaus, known as yayla. While the lakeshore has experienced significant development to accommodate visitors, the traditional lifestyle persists in the higher altitudes, where stone and timber houses stand as an architectural legacy of the Black Sea mountaineers.
