Overview of the Church

Situated at the very summit of the ancient rock-hewn town of Uplistsikhe in the Shida Kartli region, the Uplistsikhe Church (also known as the Church of the Prince) is a remarkable monument of Georgian architectural history. Dating back to the 9th and 10th centuries, this Christian basilica holds profound symbolic significance. It was built directly over what were once the principal pagan temples of the cave city, visually and physically representing the triumph and establishment of Christianity in the region.

Architecture and Historical Significance

Unlike the surrounding caves which were carved directly out of the sandstone, the Uplistsikhe Church is a structural building constructed from a combination of stone and brick. It is designed as a three-church basilica, a style unique to Georgian ecclesiastical architecture. The interior is relatively austere but contains faded remnants of historical frescoes. The contrast between the smooth, carved rock of the pagan city and the structured, soaring walls of the Christian basilica is one of the most fascinating aspects of the site.

Standing in the church courtyard provides one of the best vantage points in the entire complex, offering sweeping panoramic views of the Mtkvari (Kura) River valley and the rugged landscape below.

Practical Tips for Visiting

Visiting the church is a seamless part of exploring the Uplistsikhe Cave Town, located just 10 kilometers from the city of Gori. The climb to the top of the complex requires navigating uneven, rocky paths and ancient stone steps, so wearing sturdy, comfortable walking shoes with good grip is absolutely essential.

Since this is an active place of worship for locals, visitors are required to follow traditional dress codes (covering knees and shoulders; women are asked to cover their heads). The site is particularly stunning during the golden hour just before sunset, when the sandstone glows and the views from the church courtyard are at their most spectacular.
