St. Salome Church Ruins

Duration: 1–3 hours

Hidden away in the scenic landscapes of the Tsalka Municipality, near the village of Dashbashi, lie the remains of what is locally known as St. Salome’s Church. While time and weather have taken their toll on the structure, the site remains a testament to the region's medieval ecclesiastical architecture and the long-standing spiritual traditions of the Trialeti plateau. Visitors usually come here not just for the ruins, but for the profound sense of isolation and the panoramic views of the surrounding canyon landscape.

Historical Context and Architecture

Though information regarding the exact construction date is sparse, the masonry style—typical of the late medieval period in Georgia—suggests a place of worship that served the local mountain communities. The ruins feature a classic hall-church design, a common architectural form in the region, characterized by simple but sturdy stonework. You can still identify the altar niche and sections of the foundation, which indicate the church was once a modest yet significant community hub. The weathered stones, scattered within the perimeter, carry the weight of centuries, offering a silent witness to the history of the Kvemo Kartli region.

Visiting Tips and Recommendations

The ruins are best visited in combination with the nearby Dashbashi Canyon (now often referred to as Tsalka Canyon). Since the road to the site is unpaved in parts, a 4x4 vehicle is recommended if you plan to get as close as possible, though a short hike is often the most rewarding way to experience the terrain. The best time to visit is from late spring to early autumn when the wildflowers are in bloom and the weather is stable. Be mindful that there are no facilities on-site, so carry water and a light snack. Nearby, you should definitely explore the Dashbashi Canyon natural monument, the Khramis Hesi waterfall, and the ancient ruins of Bedeni, which are within a manageable driving distance for a full-day itinerary.
