The Legacy of Catholicos-Patriarch Ambrosi

The church commemorates Ambrosi Khelaia, who was elected Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia in 1921, precisely as Soviet forces established control over the country. Born in Martvili in 1861, Ambrosi became a prominent scholar, historian, and defender of the Georgian language and church autocephaly. His tenure as patriarch was defined by his open opposition to the anti-religious policies of the communist regime.

This act led to his arrest, public trial, and imprisonment by Soviet authorities.
