Kekhijvari Church

Duration: 1–3 hours

While Tserovani is widely recognized today for its modern residential layout, the quiet hills overlooking the village hide a significant piece of history: the Kekhijvari Church. This monument, dating back to the 7th century, stands as a prime example of the classic tetraconch style, a hallmark of early Georgian ecclesiastical architecture. Built from precisely cut tuff blocks, the structure remains remarkably intact despite the turbulent history of the region.

Architectural Features and History

The complex consists of the main church and the ruins of a perimeter wall, suggesting that the site once functioned as a fortified sanctuary. The dome, resting on a square base, reflects the advanced masonry skills of the early medieval period. Although the original interior frescoes have largely faded due to time, the geometric carvings on the window frames and the rhythmic alignment of the facades remain remarkably distinct. Visiting Kekhijvari offers a rare, quiet experience, far from the busy routes of mainstream tourism.

Practical Information and Tips

The most convenient way to reach the church is by private car. The journey from Tbilisi takes approximately 40 minutes via the Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Larsi highway. Once you reach the Tserovani turn-off, follow the local road toward the hills; the final stretch of the path might require a short, easy walk across uneven ground. The best time for a visit is during late spring or early autumn, when the surrounding hills turn green and the weather is pleasant. Please note that this is not an active monastery with daily services; therefore, bring your own water and ensure you have sturdy footwear for the natural terrain surrounding the site.

Nearby sites to explore include the iconic Jvari Monastery and the ancient city of Mtskheta. For those planning a full-day cultural excursion, the Shio-Mgvime Monastery is also located within a manageable driving distance.
