Tokis Namosakhlari Ancient Settlement

Duration: 1–3 hours

High above the surrounding river valleys in the volcanic uplands of Samtskhe-Javakheti lies Tokis Namosakhlari, a sweeping archaeological complex that preserves the multi-layered remnants of an ancient, fortified highland settlement. Unlike highly restored heritage sites, this location offers an untouched look at how early communities adapted to a severe, high-altitude landscape. The atmosphere is defined by silence and vast horizons, where stone foundations and old defensive perimeters blend into the ridges near the village of Toki.

Historical Layers and Strategic Significance

The complex at Tokis Namosakhlari represents a prolonged human presence in the southern borderlands of Georgia. Archaeological evidence points to eras when these highlands were heavily populated and organized around fortified strongpoints. The site includes the remains of domestic quarters, terraced agricultural plots, and defensive enclosures designed to offer refuge during periods of invasion. Its position on a high plateau provided a commanding view of the entire territory, allowing sentries to monitor movement through nearby valleys and coordinate signals with other strongholds along the Mtkvari River basin.

Architecture and Construction Methods

The construction style at Tokis Namosakhlari relies heavily on megalithic traditions and dry-stone masonry (mshrali cqoba), a technique where large, unmortared basalt blocks are carefully selected and fitted together. This engineering method was highly practical for the Javakheti plateau, where volcanic stone was abundant but lime mortar was difficult to produce. Visitors can trace the outlines of massive double-faced walls that once protected the settlement. The structural layout reveals how builders integrated natural basalt cliffs and steep slopes directly into the defensive perimeter, creating a formidable barrier with minimal materials.
