Tbikeli Lake

Duration: 1–3 hours

Tbikeli Lake is a high-altitude natural reservoir located in the upper reaches of Mtirala National Park within the Adjara-Imereti range. Fed entirely by atmospheric precipitation, winter snowmelt, and subterranean springs, this body of water occupies a natural depression formed by geological shifts. The surrounding landscape features an exceptionally humid microclimate, supporting dense Colchic rainforests and specialized alpine vegetation that remain vivid green throughout the warm season.

Geological Formation and Hydrology

The basin of Tbikeli Lake lies at an elevation of approximately 2,000 meters above sea level. It operates as a closed hydrological system where water levels fluctuate naturally based on seasonal snow accumulation and summer rainfall patterns. The water is highly transparent and lacks heavy mineral sedimentation, producing a distinct mirror-like reflective surface. The extreme humidity of the Adjara mountains creates a frequent mist layer over the water, which helps regulate the local water temperature and preserves the surrounding moisture-loving plant varieties.

Biodiversity and Environmental Significance

The lake and its immediate shoreline serve as a critical habitat for specialized high-mountain fauna. Most notably, Tbikeli Lake is a breeding ground for the Caucasian salamander (Mertensiella caucasica), an amphibian endemic to the Caucasus region that requires pristine, cold-water environments to survive. The surrounding montane wetlands also support population pockets of the Asia Minor frog and various high-altitude invertebrate species. The mixed broadleaf and coniferous forest borders, rich with ancient beech and chestnut trees, function as an important migratory corridor and nesting territory for regional birds of prey.
