Sidze-Rdzlis Lake

Duration: 2–4 hours

The Sidze-Rdzlis Tba (Groom and Bride Lake) is an alpine lake resting high in the Meskheti Range within the Adigeni Municipality. Positioned at an elevation of nearly 2,300 meters above sea level, this natural body of water is heavily isolated from modern developments, surrounded entirely by pristine high-mountain meadows and craggy ridges. The atmospheric alpine landscape creates a profound sense of stillness, where the mirror-like surface of the water reflects the shifting mountain skies and surrounding wilderness.

The Legend of the Groom and Bride

The naming of Sidze-Rdzlis Tba comes directly from local Meskhetian folklore. According to historical oral traditions, a young bride and groom were escaping a forced pursuit through the high mountain passes. Exhausted and unable to run further, they prayed to be saved from captivity. Local myth states that the earth opened up at this exact spot, swallowing them both and filling the depression with crystal-clear mountain water to eternalize their bond. The lake remains a cultural symbol of devotion within the folklore of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region.

Geographic and Ecological Significance

Geologically, the lake is fed primarily by thawing winter snow and natural underground springs, keeping its water exceptionally clear and cool throughout the year. The surrounding ecosystem consists of vulnerable sub-alpine flora, vibrant summer wildflower carpets, and seasonal wetlands. The lake sits near the border of the Guria Range, serving as an important geographic marker and watering spot for seasonal migratory herds and native high-altitude wildlife.
