Shkernali Lake
Shkernali Lake sits high in the mountainous terrain of upper Adjara, positioned within the Khulo Municipality near the sub-alpine pastures of the Arsiani Range. Located at an altitude of approximately 2,000 meters above sea level, this natural alpine water body is primarily known to local shepherds and dedicated hikers. The lake occupies a small mountain depression enclosed by sprawling sub-alpine meadows that fill with wildflowers as the winter snows melt away.
Geographic Formation and Ecosystem
Shkernali Lake functions as a high-altitude alpine pond, relying heavily on seasonal snowmelt and atmospheric precipitation to maintain its water levels. Consequently, the volume of the lake fluctuates significantly between seasons, reaching its peak depth in late spring and shrinking during the dry late summer weeks. The surrounding landscape features jagged rocky outcrops and dense thickets of Caucasian rhododendron (shkeri), which produce striking white and cream blossoms in early June. The combination of high elevation, moist mountain air, and isolated geography creates a distinct, fragile microclimate that supports specialized alpine flora and serves as a vital water source for migratory birds and grazing livestock.
Cultural Heritage and Regional Significance
The highlands surrounding the lake have served as traditional summer pastures (jailas) for generations of Adjarian farmers, who move their herds to these high-altitude meadows from June to September. This seasonal migration connects the natural landscape of Shkernali Lake to the broader living heritage of the Khulo region. The area represents the traditional high-mountain lifestyle, where timber architecture and historic wooden mosques dominate the lower valley settlements. From the ridges overlooking the lake basin, clear days reveal expansive panoramas across the Arsiani Range, linking this isolated water basin to the historical trade and pastoral routes that run between southwestern Georgia and Samtskhe-Javakheti.
