Savane St. Nicholas Church

The Savane St. Nicholas Church is a significant 11th-century monument located in the village of Savane, within the Sachkhere Municipality. Constructed in 1046 during the reign of King Bagrat IV, this structure is a prime example of the medieval Georgian domed church style. It is noted for its refined stone masonry and the preservation of its original aesthetic, having escaped the heavy reconstruction that altered many other regional sites.

Historical Architecture

The church is constructed from hewn stone blocks, featuring a centralized plan typical of the era. The exterior facades display intricate stone carvings, including various crosses and geometric patterns that demonstrate the high level of masonry skill present in the Imereti region during the 11th century. Unlike many other churches that have lost their original wall paintings, the interior here retains fragments of frescoes dating from the 11th to the 13th centuries, offering insight into the evolution of local religious art.

Structural Design and Setting

The building features a small, elegant dome resting on a drum with arched windows, which allows natural light to filter into the interior. The design focuses on balance and verticality. The church is situated on a slightly elevated area in the village, providing a calm atmosphere surrounded by the greenery of the Kvirila River valley. Its location has helped it remain a peaceful spot, away from the typical flow of major tourist traffic.

To reach the village of Savane, travelers should drive from the town of Sachkhere. The journey covers approximately 12 kilometers and takes about 20–30 minutes by car. The road conditions are generally stable, though drivers should exercise caution on the narrower mountain roads leading into the village. The church grounds are easily accessible by foot once you reach the village center.
