Sanislo Plateau
Situated in the Adigeni Municipality at an altitude of approximately 2,000 meters, the Sanislo Plateau is a vast alpine pasture area linked to the heritage of the Meskhetian highlands. Far from commercial centers, this location consists of rolling meadows and wildflowers, offering a direct view into the mountain landscape of southern Georgia.
Natural Landscape
Sanislo is defined by its extensive alpine meadows, which have supported livestock for generations. It sits within the influence of the Arsiani Range, characterized by high-mountain terrain. The climate is alpine, meaning weather can change quickly. Even in summer, temperatures drop significantly after sunset. The vegetation includes sub-alpine grasses that cover the slopes in colors during late spring and early summer.
Exploring the Plateau
Travelers visit Sanislo for the panoramic views and isolation. It is a suitable destination for light hiking, photography, and quiet observation. There is no tourist infrastructure, so visitors should be prepared for an autonomous experience. Scattered across the plateau are simple wooden shelters used by shepherds. These are active, private working areas, so please respect these spaces. The route from Abastumani or Adigeni leads through dense coniferous forests before the terrain rises into the open, emerald meadow.
Practical Travel Information
The visiting season runs from June to September. Before June, trails are often wet or covered in snow, and by late October, winter weather sets in. A reliable 4x4 vehicle is necessary, as the unpaved access roads can be difficult to navigate after rain. Visitors should arrive prepared for sudden shifts in mountain weather and carry adequate supplies, as there are no facilities on-site.
