Sakiri Two-Church Basilica

Duration: 1 hour

The ruins of the Sakiri Two-Church Basilica stand quietly in the volcanic landscapes of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region, just outside the village of Sakiri. Dating back to the V–VI centuries, this site represents a highly specific and localized form of early medieval Georgian ecclesiastical architecture. Stripped of later additions by time and elements, the remaining masonry provides a clear, structural look into the religious priorities and building techniques of the era.

Architectural Typology of the Two-Church Basilica

This ruin is a prime example of the Oreklesiani (two-church) basilica, a uniquely Georgian architectural adaptation. Unlike a standard three-aisled basilica, this layout features two parallel naves of different sizes separated by a solid wall with connecting doors. The central, larger nave served as the primary sanctuary, while the smaller, typically southern nave functioned as a distinct, secondary chapel or annex. The walls are constructed using local volcanic tuff and rough-hewn basalt, laid with a precision that has allowed the foundational footprint to survive for over a millennium. Studying the stone courses reveals an emphasis on raw structural integrity rather than elaborate ornamentation.

Geographical and Cultural Context

Situated in the rugged terrain of the Trialeti Range foothills, the basilica was historically positioned to serve the rural monastic and lay communities of the upper Borjomi Gorge area. The selection of this specific site highlights the early Christian practice of integrating places of worship with the natural topography. The surrounding dense forests and steep river valleys provided natural protection, allowing the ecclesiastical center to function during a period marked by frequent territorial shifts. Today, the surviving foundation lines offer archaeologists crucial data regarding the spatial distribution of early medieval settlements in southern Georgia.
