Sabanako Hill
Sabanako is a low 669 m peak on the northern edge of Tbilisi, between the districts of Gldani and Mukhiani. It is not a developed attraction, but a quiet hill with open views over the Tbilisi Sea, the northern suburbs and, on clear days, the distant Caucasus ridge.
Why Visit Sabanako & What to Expect
The hill offers a short, easy outing close to the city. Expect wide grassy slopes, scattered shrubs and a calm atmosphere far from central traffic. The summit area is open and windy, with panoramic views to the reservoir and the sprawl of Gldani. It is a good place for a sunset walk, casual photography and a first taste of Tbilisi’s outskirts without leaving the capital.
Trail Details & Natural Wonders
There is no marked trail network. Access is via dirt tracks and footpaths that climb from the residential streets of Mukhiani and Avshniani. The gain is modest, about 80-120 m depending on the start point, and the walk takes 20-40 minutes one way. Vegetation is typical for Tbilisi’s semi-arid hills: dry grasses, thorn shrubs and spring wildflowers. Birds of prey are sometimes seen circling above the ridge.
How to Get There & Road Conditions
From central Tbilisi drive north toward Gldani / Mukhiani. The last 1-2 km are on narrow residential streets that turn into unpaved gravel tracks. A regular sedan can reach the lower slopes in dry weather if driven carefully; after rain the tracks get muddy and a 4x4 or higher clearance is safer. Most visitors park at the edge of the built-up area and continue on foot. Hiking access is straightforward from bus stops in Mukhiani.
Practical Travel Tips & Best Season to Visit
Spring and autumn are the most pleasant, with mild temperatures and green or golden slopes. Summer is hot and exposed, bring water, hat and sunscreen. There are no facilities, shops or toilets on the hill. Wear sturdy shoes, the ground is uneven and can be slippery after rain. Allow 1-2 hours for a relaxed up-and-down visit.

What to See Nearby
Combine Sabanako with the Tbilisi Sea, a large reservoir with walking areas and cafes, about 10 minutes by car. Gldani Park offers playgrounds and green space. For a longer hike, the trail to Zedazeni Monastery starts further north and gives deeper views over the valley.
