Rokiti Savior Church

Duration: 1 hour

The Rokiti Savior Church, locally known as Matskhovari, stands in the quiet valley of the Zestaponi Municipality in the Imereti region. This medieval stone structure is a classic example of traditional Georgian hall-type architecture. Unlike the grand, soaring cathedrals of the major regional capitals, this village sanctuary reflects the rural spiritual life of medieval Georgia, built to endure generations of conflict while blending seamlessly into the surrounding countryside.

Architectural Significance and Medieval Frescoes

The construction of the church relies entirely on carefully shaped blocks of local stone, fitted together with thick mortar to form solid, window-slit walls that helped the structure survive centuries of local wars. The interior preserves the layout typical of early and developed medieval single-nave chapels, which served as local gathering points during periods of foreign invasion. Inside the main hall, fragments of faded monumental wall paintings and historical frescoes remain visible on the plaster. These surviving images offer glimpses into the regional artistic styles of western Georgia, highlighting how local painters adapted classical iconography to fit the smaller scale of village community churches.
