Polkovoy Garden in Telavi

The Polkovoy Garden in the center of Telavi is a quiet public space that reveals an often-overlooked layer of the city's municipal development. While visitors usually flock to medieval fortifications, this park preserves the layout and atmosphere of late 19th-century Kakheti. Large, mature trees form a dense canopy over the walkways, offering a cool sanctuary during the peak of the eastern Georgian summer. Its structured pathways and alignment with neighboring streets showcase the transition of Telavi from a fragmented medieval stronghold into a planned provincial administrative center.

The Imperial Garrison and Urban Expansion

The origins of the park date back to the integration of Georgia into the Russian Empire, when Telavi became the administrative capital of its own Uyezd (district) within the Tiflis Governorate. To secure the region, the imperial military stationed a regiment (polk) in the city. The garden was cleared and organized directly alongside the military barracks to serve as a recreational parade ground and walking area for officers, state officials, and their families. Over the decades, the surrounding neighborhood grew to mirror this administrative status, featuring brick townhouses with a mix of traditional Georgian wooden balconies and European neoclassical facades.

Botanical Heritage and Civic Significance

Beyond its military past, the space played a major role in introducing ornamental gardening and non-native plant species to the Kakheti region. Local planners selected specific tree varieties to withstand the dry summer heat, creating an enduring microclimate. Following the withdrawal of the imperial garrison, the territory transitioned fully into a civic park, remaining a favored gathering spot for generations of Telavi residents who sought an alternative to the more exposed hillsides of Nadikvari.
