Patara Chanchkeri Waterfall

Duration: 1–2 hours

Patara Chanchkeri, which translates to Small Waterfall, is a quiet spot located near the village of Zvare in the Imereti region. While many drivers pass through the Tskaltsitela river gorge focusing on the main road, this site offers a brief escape into a forested ravine. The water cascades down mossy, layered rock formations into a shallow basin, providing a cool microclimate even during warmer months.

Accessibility and Terrain

The site is accessed directly from the roadside, requiring a short walk of roughly 15 to 20 minutes through deciduous woodland. The trail is generally straightforward, though it can become muddy and slick after rain; wearing boots with a reliable tread is highly recommended. Because the path is not paved, it remains a rustic, natural experience rather than a formal park attraction. The forest floor is dense with ferns and moss, making it a peaceful area for those who prefer quiet nature over crowded viewpoints.

Seasonal Observations

  • Spring: The flow is at its peak due to snowmelt and seasonal rainfall, making the waterfall most active.
  • Summer: The water volume may decrease significantly, but the thick canopy of trees keeps the temperature noticeably cooler than the surrounding open roads, making it a preferred spot for a picnic.
  • Autumn: The surrounding foliage turns deep shades of yellow and orange, creating a striking contrast against the dark, damp rock faces.

Practical Information

There is no infrastructure at this site. Visitors should arrive prepared with sufficient drinking water and snacks. The site is part of the local ecosystem, and it is strictly expected that all visitors follow leave-no-trace principles by packing out all waste. Because the location is situated directly within the gorge environment, be aware of falling debris or unstable ground if there has been recent heavy weather. Access is straightforward for anyone comfortable with uneven, unpaved forest walking paths.
