North American Department (Batumi Botanical Garden)

Duration: 1–2 hours

The North American Department of the Batumi Botanical Garden represents one of the most ecologically diverse phytogeographic zones along the Georgian Black Sea coast. Established on the terraced slopes of the Green Cape (Mtsvane Kontskhi), this extensive section faithfully replicates the forest ecosystems of the North American continent. Walking through this forested zone feels like stepping into a dense, temperate woodland of the Americas, characterized by towering conifers, broadleaf giants, and a distinct microclimate that thrives in the humid subtropical environment of the Adjara region.

Botanical Composition and Forest Ecology

The collection features over a hundred species of trees and shrubs native to the United States and Canada. The undisputed highlights are the giant sequoias and coastal redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens), which have adapted remarkably well to the local soil and humidity, reaching impressive heights since their planting. The department also features extensive groves of bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) near the lower, wetter elevations, alongside majestic tulip trees (Liriodendron tulipifera), magnolias, and various species of pine and oak. The layout is meticulously designed to mimic natural forest succession, allowing the flora to grow with minimal artificial interference. The dense canopy provides a vital habitat for local bird species while serving as an active site for botanical research and dendrological studies in the South Caucasus.
