Darba Church of the Mother of God

Duration: 1–2 hours

The ruins of the Darba Church of the Mother of God, historically known also as Kvelatsminda (All Saints), stand on the site of a deserted medieval village within the Sagarejo Municipality. This archaeological landscape offers a clear look into rural ecclesiastical life during the High Middle Ages. Built as a single-nave hall church, the structure reflects the typical architectural practices of historical Kakheti, where builders relied on local stone and balance rather than monumental scale.

Architecture and Historical Landscape of Nasoflari Darba

The church sits within a nasoflari—a Georgian term for an abandoned settlement where homes and communal structures have long crumbled, leaving only the stone foundations of the village church. Constructed from hewn limestone and mixed cobblestone, the remaining walls preserve the traditional layout of the sanctuary, including the semicircular altar apse on the eastern end. Fragments of simple stone cornices and pilasters demonstrate that while the church served a remote community, it was built with considerable care. Over the centuries, structural elements have yielded to vegetation and weather, yet the masonry retains its original early medieval masonry style without later layers of modern intervention.

Cultural Significance on the Iori Plateau

This church operated as both a liturgical space and a regional landmark for the historical agricultural settlements dotting the Iori River plateau. Small, single-nave chapels like this were central to the social cohesion of rural medieval Georgia, functioning as secure gathering points during periods of borderland instability. Today, the surrounding fields contain low earthworks and stone scatters that mark where the residential quarters of Darba once stood, providing historians with valuable context regarding domestic life and settlement patterns in eastern Georgia before these villages relocated closer to protected lowlands.
