Nariman Narimanov House-Museum
The Nariman Narimanov Memorial House-Museum sits within an old residential neighborhood of Tbilisi, occupying the historical home where this prominent early 20th-century statesman, writer, and physician once lived. As a figure who deeply influenced the political and social landscape of the Caucasus, Narimanov spent significant years in Georgia's capital. Today, this dedicated memorial space serves as an archival sanctuary, preserving the physical environment, intellectual property, and personal belongings that defined his multifaceted career before and during the Soviet transition.
The Life and Legacy of Nariman Narimanov
Born in Tbilisi in 1870, Nariman Narimanov emerged as one of the preeminent public intellectuals in the South Caucasus. He trained as a medical doctor at Novorossiya University in Odessa, using his practice to fight epidemics and open free public pharmacies. Beyond his medical work, Narimanov was a pioneering dramatist and prose writer, translating classical texts and writing the first national historical tragedy in his native language. His political trajectory eventually led him to become a major Soviet statesman, serving as the Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars of the Azerbaijan SSR and later as a co-chairman of the Central Executive Committee of the USSR.
