Green Monastery (Chitakhevi)

The Green Monastery, officially known as the Chitakhevi St. George Monastery, is an ancient monastic complex positioned in a densely forested river gorge near Borjomi. The site gets its popular name from the distinct green hue of the stones used in its construction, which mirror the deep, emerald colors of the surrounding valley. It is an exceptionally peaceful spiritual sanctuary where the sounds of the local stream and native woodlands frame centuries of Orthodox monastic life.

Medieval Architecture and Construction

The primary church of the complex dates back to the turn of the 9th century, showcasing early medieval Georgian masonry. Constructed using local roughly-hewn green tuff stone, the basilica features basic yet robust structural lines typical of early monastic architecture in the historic Tori region. Adjacent to the main church stands a two-story bell tower, built later during the 14th century, which displays more ornate stone carvings and decorative geometric patterns around its archways.

The Martyrdom and Cultural Legacy

The monastery holds deep historical significance due to a tragic invasion during the 16th century by Ottoman forces, led by Shah Tahmasp. According to local records and cultural memory, dozens of resident monks were massacred inside the complex for refusing to renounce their faith. The stones in the mountain stream running past the church permanently retain dark reddish stains, which local tradition attributes to the blood of these Chitakhevi martyrs, making the site an important regional pilgrimage center.
