Merisi Waterfall
Merisi Waterfall, hidden within the lush wilderness of the Keda Municipality, stands as one of the most serene natural landmarks in the Adjara region. Formed by a clean mountain river plunging over high rocky ledges, this waterfall creates a pristine pool surrounded by deep gorges and old-growth trees. The surrounding climate remains refreshingly cool even during peak summer, filled with the mist of crashing water and the scent of wild mountain flora. Unlike more crowded coastal attractions, it preserves an authentic atmosphere of the Lesser Caucasus highlands.
Geological Formation & Natural Landscape
The landscape around the waterfall is characterized by steep, rugged cliffs composed of ancient volcanic rock formations typical of southwest Georgia. The high humidity of the gorge supports a rich ecosystem of mixed deciduous and coniferous forests, where moss-covered boulders and wild walnut trees line the riverbed. During the spring thaw, the water flow dramatically increases, transforming the stream into a powerful torrent that reshapes the gravel banks below. In autumn, the dense forest canopy shifts into intense shades of gold and crimson, making it an exceptional period for landscape photography and geographical exploration.
Cultural Heritage of the Merisi Valley
The valley has a long history linked to the traditional agricultural life of southwestern Georgia. The village of Merisi itself is deeply tied to old Adjarian traditions, famous for polyphonic singing and mountain farming. For centuries, the local communities adapted to this isolated terrain, cultivating terraced vineyards and orchards along the lower slopes of the gorge. The nearby river network historically powered small wooden watermills, some of which still stand as relics of rural engineering. Exploring this valley offers a direct glimpse into how mountain communities balanced survival with preserving the natural environment around them.
