Maghraani Berikaant Khati Church

Duration: 1–3 hours

Berikaant Khati stands 2 km north of the village of Maghraani in Akhmeta Municipality. It is a small late-medieval hall church in ruins, built of local river stone, and visited for its quiet setting above the Alazani Valley.

Historical Context & Significance

The church belongs to the late Middle Ages and served a small rural community. It is listed among the monuments of Maghraani theme and is described in the Georgian heritage inventory, vol. 2, p.121. Its modest scale reflects village building traditions rather than a major monastic foundation.

Architecture & Hidden Details to Look For

The plan is rectangular 7.2 x 5.3 m. Masonry is mixed-size river stone with fairly regular coursing. Walls survive to 1.5-1.8 m and the interior is filled with rubble. The entrance is from the west. In the east there is a semicircular apse with a narrow window on the axis and one small arched niche on each side.

Visitor Information & How to Get There

Drive from Tbilisi to Akhmeta is about 2 hours on the main Kakheti highway, then turn toward Maghraani. The village road is paved to the settlement; the last approach to the ruin is on a compacted earth track. A sedan is fine in dry weather, 4x4 is more comfortable after rain. Park in the village and walk the short field path.

Practical Travel Tips for Respectful Tourism

Dress modestly as at any Georgian Orthodox site. There are no facilities, water or signage on site. Wear sturdy shoes for uneven ground and rubble. Visit in spring or autumn for mild weather and clear views of the valley.
