Maghalmta Peak
Maghalmta is a 2,512-metre peak in the Shuakhevi Municipality of Adjara, Georgia. Located on the western slopes of the Arsiani Range, it sits above the mountain villages of Darchidzeebi and Macharelati. The mountain is characterized by wide open ridges and deep valleys, making it a reliable destination for summer hiking and winter ski touring far from crowded resort areas.
Alpine Terrain and Flora
The elevation gain starts around 1,400 to 1,500 metres at the village level, ascending through sub-alpine zones to the 2,512-metre summit. Hikers will navigate through slopes covered in endemic rhododendron and rocky outcrops. During late spring and summer, the meadows bloom with alpine wildflowers, while autumn turns the landscape a deep russet. The summit ridge provides unobstructed 360-degree views of the Arsiani Range, and on clear days, you can spot the distant ridges descending toward the Black Sea coast.
Route Conditions and Access
Reaching the starting point requires a capable 4x4 vehicle due to unpaved gravel roads leading up from Shuakhevi toward Darchidzeebi. In winter, these roads hold heavy snow and require appropriate tires and clearance.
There are no marked trails or infrastructure leading to the peak. Summer hikers should expect a 4 to 6-hour round trip, relying on offline maps and basic navigation skills. Ski tourers typically visit between January and March, encountering approximately 1,000 metres of vertical ascent on open, untracked slopes. Since the backcountry terrain is unpatrolled and prone to shifting snowpack, avalanche safety equipment and strong navigation skills are mandatory. Bring all necessary water, wind protection, and supplies, as mobile coverage on the mountain is highly unreliable.
