Levitana Lake

Duration: 1–3 hours

Levitana Lake is a natural water body located in the Borjomi Municipality of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region, Georgia. Situated near the village of Zvare, the lake lies on the northern slopes of the Trialeti Range.

Physical and Geographical Characteristics

The lake is primarily fed by underground springs and atmospheric precipitation. Its water level remains relatively stable throughout the year, typically reaching its peak during the spring snowmelt. During the winter months, the lake's surface often freezes. The surrounding terrain consists of mid-to-high mountain relief, offering a mild microclimate.

Flora and Fauna

The lake's basin is enveloped by a dense mixed forest ecosystem, predominantly featuring coniferous trees (spruce, fir) and deciduous species (beech, oak, hornbeam). Due to the dense surrounding vegetation, the water often reflects a deep, mirror-like green hue. The area is home to small forest mammals, various bird species, and amphibians, playing a crucial role in maintaining the local biodiversity.

Tourism and Access

Levitana Lake is classified as an easy-to-access hiking destination. There is no commercial or tourist infrastructure around the lake, which has helped preserve its natural, untouched state. Visitors are advised to bring their own food, drinking water, and necessary supplies, as well as to follow Leave No Trace principles.

Nearby points of interest include:

  • Zvare Mineral Springs: Known for their naturally carbonated, therapeutic mineral waters.
  • Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park: A large protected area offering extensive hiking and horseback riding trails.
