Lebodziri Peak

Duration: 4–6 hours

Lebodziri is a 2,244-meter peak in the Meskheti Range on the border of Guria and Adjara, just above the mountain resort of Gomismta. The summit and its ridges give open views toward the Black Sea, the Guria hills and the high Adjara mountains, with alpine meadows, seasonal fog seas and small lakes such as Tbikeli Lake nearby.

Why Visit Lebodziri & What to Expect

The area is valued for wide, unobstructed panoramas and a true alpine atmosphere a few hours from the coast. Expect windy ridges, fast-changing weather, grazing horses and cows in summer, and long views that on clear days reach from Batumi to the Greater Caucasus. The landscape is open grassland with low shrubs, not forest, so the sense of space is strong.

Trail Details & Natural Wonders

The most used approach starts from Gomismta at about 2,000 m. From the cabins to the top is a 3–5 km round trip with 200–300 m of gain, mostly on grassy tracks and shepherd paths. Key natural features include:

  • Tbikeli Lake, a small tarn below the ridge
  • Alpine meadows with wildflowers in June–July
  • Fog seas that fill the valleys in early morning The hike is non-technical, but the ground can be wet and the ridge exposed to wind.

How to Get There & Road Conditions

Access is by mountain road from Ozurgeti via Bakhmaro road or from Chokhatauri side. The final climb to Gomismta is unpaved, steep and often rutted. A 4x4 is required; a sedan cannot reach the resort safely. In dry summer conditions experienced drivers reach Gomismta in 2.5–3.5 hours from Ozurgeti. The road is usually closed by snow from late October to May. From Gomismta to Lebodziri you continue on foot.

Practical Travel Tips & Best Season to Visit

Best season is late June to early September. Start early to avoid afternoon clouds. Bring warm layers, waterproof jacket, sturdy boots and sun protection. There are no shops on the ridge; carry water and food. Mobile signal is patchy. Overnight stays are possible in wooden cabins in Gomismta, book ahead in July–August.
