Kvitkiristskaro St. George Church and Petre Tower

The Kvitkiristskaro complex, located in the Dusheti Municipality of the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region, consists of a hall-type St. George Church and a defensive structure known as Petre Tower. Positioned on a highland slope near the Aragvi River basin, this site exemplifies late medieval Georgian mountain architecture, where religious spaces and defensive strongholds were built side by side to serve isolated communities.

Late Medieval Mountain Architecture

Constructed from roughly hewn fieldstone, the St. George Church follows a straightforward hall-church design. It lacks extensive exterior decorations, prioritizing durability and functionality in a harsh alpine environment. Standing a few meters away is the Petre Tower, a dry-stone fortification. Historically, families used towers like this for shelter during raids. The structural layout—combining living quarters with arrow slits and observation points—shows how highland residents adapted to constant regional instability.

Driving to Kvitkiristskaro

Reaching the complex involves navigating unpaved rural roads that branch off from the main Georgian Military Highway. A 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended due to rutted and uneven surfaces, especially after heavy rain. The drive from Tbilisi takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. Once parked, visitors must walk a short distance over a grassy, uneven incline to reach the ruins. The site is entirely undeveloped, with no visitor facilities, paved paths, or guardrails. The best months to visit are between May and October, when the ground is dry and the mountain passes are clear of deep snow.
