Kvirila River

Duration: 3-6 hours Free

The Kvirila River is one of the most significant rivers in western Georgia, serving as a major left tributary of the Rioni River. Originating in the Racha Range, it flows primarily through the Imereti region. The river is perhaps best known for its passage through Chiatura, a town famous for its extensive manganese mining operations and unique network of Soviet-era cable cars. The Kvirila's waters have historically been affected by the mining industry, often taking on a dark hue. Despite this, the river valley offers dramatic scenery, with steep cliffs and deep gorges, particularly in the upper reaches. The Kvirila also flows past the ancient Katskhi Pillar, a remarkable natural limestone monolith.
