St. Mary's Church in Kolagi

Duration: 1 hour

Located in the eastern stretches of the Gurjaani Municipality, St. Mary's Church in the village of Kolagi represents the architectural restraint and spiritual endurance of the Kakheti region. Rather than towering over the landscape, this stone structure integrates directly into the plains and agricultural terrain of eastern Georgia, serving as a focal point for the local community for centuries.

Architectural Form and Materials

Built primarily from local rubble stone and traditional Georgian brick, the church follows a simple hall layout typical of medieval rural parishes. The exterior walls show the distinct layering methods used by regional masons to ensure structural stability against the elements. The interior is characterized by its high vaulted ceiling and minimal ornamentation, directing focus purely toward the altar. Narrow window slits were designed to regulate light and provide a measure of defense during unstable periods in Kakhetian history. The site remains a well-preserved example of functional ecclesiastical design in rural Georgia.
