Khospio Mosque Ruins

Located in the village of Khospio within the Akhalkalaki Municipality, the remaining structure of the local mosque stands as a prominent historical marker of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region. Built of local stone, the decaying walls represent the complex, multi-confessional past of Southern Georgia and the shifting cultural influences that swept across the high-altitude Javakheti plateau.

The Falavandishvili Legacy and Stone Masonry

Historically, this religious site is closely tied to the Falavandishvili family, a prominent noble house that held significant influence across the province. The structure highlights a distinct era when local aristocracy patronized diverse religious establishments.

• The building utilizes heavy, rough-hewn basalt and volcanic tuff, materials native to the rocky landscapes of Akhalkalaki.
• Although the roof has completely collapsed, the surviving foundation lines and thick lower walls indicate a sturdy, unadorned architectural approach designed to withstand harsh alpine winters.
• The absence of intricate decorative motifs suggests a functional community space rather than a highly ornate imperial commission.

High-Altitude Environment

Positioned at a high elevation, Khospio endures severe weather, which has steadily worn down the mortar and exposed the raw stone over generations. The ruins overlook the vast agricultural fields of the plateau, blending naturally into the rugged geography of the surrounding highlands.
