Khani Waterfall
Khani Waterfall is a striking natural monument situated in the deep river gorge of the Baghdati municipality. Surrounded by the dense, old-growth forests of the Imereti region, this powerful cascade plunges over moss-covered volcanic rocks, creating a persistent mist in the valley. It stands out for its raw, unmanicured environment, offering visitors a direct connection to the mountainous geography of western Georgia.
Geological Formation and the Khani River Valley
The waterfall is a direct product of the tectonic and erosive forces shaping the Meskheti Range. As the Khani River cuts through the softer limestone and sandstone layers of the region, it creates steep drops and narrow ravines. The surrounding flora is dominated by broadleaf deciduous trees, including centuries-old beeches and chestnuts, which stabilize the steep, rocky slopes. The constant flow of the mountain streams ensures a humid microclimate, supporting rare ferns and endemic moss species along the riverbanks. Local oral traditions often reference the gorge as a historical passage for shepherds navigating between the Imeretian lowlands and higher alpine pastures.
