Kavti St. George Church (Tvaladi)
Situated in the village of Kavtis-khevi within the Kaspi Municipality, the Kavti St. George Church, commonly referred to as Tvaladi, is a significant medieval structure in the Shida Kartli region. This site serves as an example of traditional Georgian ecclesiastical architecture and remains a place of quiet reflection.
Historical Significance and Construction
The church is a hall-style building constructed during the Middle Ages. Its masonry utilizes local stone, expertly cut to ensure stability and structural longevity. Unlike the grand cathedrals of urban centers, this church was designed to serve the immediate rural community, resulting in a modest, functional appearance that blends into the surrounding landscape. The interior features remnants of period frescoes and stone relief work. Its thick walls and minimal openings provide a cool, dim interior that maintains the silence necessary for traditional liturgical practice.
Access and Visiting Conditions
To reach the village of Kavtis-khevi, take the main highway toward Gori, turning off toward the Kaspi area. The drive from Tbilisi generally takes about 90 minutes. Upon arrival in the village, the church is reached by a short, unpaved path. While the approach is not physically demanding, the terrain is uneven, and sturdy hiking shoes are highly recommended for safety and comfort.
Preservation and Visitor Etiquette
The site is maintained as an active religious location. Visitors should be mindful of local customs, which include dressing respectfully by covering shoulders and knees. Because the structure is aged, avoid touching the interior walls or any remaining decorative stone carvings to ensure their preservation for future generations. The surrounding area provides a quiet environment for walking and viewing the Trialeti Range, though there are no modern amenities or facilities on-site. Visitors should plan to bring their own water and be prepared to take any trash back with them to preserve the integrity of this historic site.
