Gachedili Cascading Waterfalls

These cascading waterfalls situated near the village of Gachedili in the Martvili municipality offer a serene look at the geography of the Samegrelo region. The water flows over multiple tiers of porous limestone, which is characteristic of this area’s unique geology. As the water descends, it carves through the landscape, feeding into the wider river systems that eventually nourish the lush, subtropical forests surrounding the site.

Geology and Formation

The landscape here is shaped by the presence of calcium carbonate in the bedrock, which allows the water to sculpt deep channels and create the distinct tiers visible today. During the spring months, increased snowmelt from the Greater Caucasus mountains drives a much higher volume of water through these channels. This natural process is responsible for the ongoing erosion that sustains the falls. The surrounding vegetation is comprised of dense, Colchic-type forest, known for its high humidity and thick moss cover. This micro-environment keeps the area noticeably cool, even during the peak of the Georgian summer.

Trail Information

The path to the falls is relatively short and manageable for most visitors. The trail consists primarily of packed earth and local stone, which can become slick when exposed to consistent moisture or rainfall. Because the area is perpetually damp from the mist of the waterfall, it is recommended that visitors wear sturdy hiking boots with good grip to navigate the uneven sections near the base of the tiers.

Visitor Logistics

To ensure a quiet visit, aim to arrive before the peak hours of midday. The site does not have high-capacity infrastructure, so early morning light is also ideal for photography. Be aware that the mist around the waterfall is heavy; carrying a light, water-resistant outer layer is a practical choice to protect your gear and clothing. Access is strictly by foot from the designated parking area.
