Bordjgalo Ethnographic Museum
Located in the Kakhaberi district, on the outskirts of Batumi, the Bordjgalo Ethnographic Museum offers a rare opportunity to step back in time and witness the authentic spirit of Adjarian rural life. Unlike many state-run institutions, this is a private initiative created by Kemal Turmanidze, a master craftsman who spent decades meticulously collecting and reconstructing traditional wooden houses, tools, and artifacts that represent the region's heritage.
Architecture and Exhibits
The museum spans a considerable area where visitors can wander between various types of traditional houses, barns, and workshops. Each structure tells a story about how Adjarians lived, worked, and celebrated. You will find original wooden structures featuring intricate carvings, traditional looms, agricultural equipment, and household items that have not been in common use for over a century. The craftsmanship is the primary focus here; every corner of the museum showcases the evolution of carpentry and woodwork in Western Georgia. Pay close attention to the joinery—these houses were built using traditional techniques without a single metal nail.
Practical Information and Local Tips
The museum is situated approximately 6-7 kilometers from Batumi city center, which takes about 15-20 minutes by car or taxi. It is best to visit in the late morning or early afternoon to take advantage of natural light for photography. The tour typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours. One detail most tourists miss is the workshop area, where you can occasionally see master woodcarvers at work, keeping local traditions alive. The terrain is relatively flat and accessible, making it a perfect spot for families. If you are planning a full day, it is highly recommended to combine this visit with a trip to the nearby Gonio-Apsarus Fortress or a visit to the Batumi Botanical Garden.
