Gremi Archangels Church

Duration: 1–3 hours

Standing proudly on a hill overlooking the Alazani Valley, the Gremi Archangels Church complex serves as a vivid reminder of the once-thriving capital of the Kakheti Kingdom. Built in 1565 by King Levan of Kakheti, this structure is a rare example of a fortified religious site where the church and royal residence were integrated into a single defensive system. While often misidentified in local lore, the main temple is dedicated to the Archangels Michael and Gabriel.

History and Architecture

The architecture reflects a unique blend of local Georgian building traditions and subtle Persian influences, characteristic of the 16th-century Kakhetian school. The church is constructed from high-quality, thin bricks, giving it a distinctive reddish hue that contrasts beautifully with the lush greenery of the surrounding vineyards. Inside, the walls are adorned with frescoes dating back to 1577. It is remarkable that these paintings survived the destructive invasions of the early 17th century, including the forces of Shah Abbas I. A narrow, winding staircase inside the tower allows visitors to climb to the upper levels, where you can get a closer look at the historic masonry and take in the sweeping panoramic views of the entire Alazani Valley.

Practical Tips

To reach Gremi, you can drive from Telavi, which takes about 20-30 minutes, or catch a marshrutka heading towards Kvareli. The best time to visit is during spring or autumn when the valley is particularly photogenic. Many visitors unfortunately overlook the small museum located on the premises; it is definitely worth your time, as it houses archaeological finds and artifacts from the royal palace. Remember to dress modestly, as this is an active religious site. For a complete day trip, combine your visit with the nearby Nekresi Monastery, located just a short drive away, or the Kindzmarauli Corporation winery in Kvareli for a taste of the region's famous semi-sweet red wine.
