Gostibe Tower

In the remote highlands of the Kaspi municipality, the village of Gostibe preserves a defensive tower that serves as a silent witness to the region’s past. As part of the Trialeti cultural landscape, this structure reflects the defensive traditions necessary for life in a mountainous area defined by steep ridges and deep valleys.

Construction and Design

The tower is a classic example of dry-stone masonry, built using volcanic rock native to the surrounding slopes. Its design follows the traditional Georgian square floor plan, with walls that taper significantly as they rise, providing essential structural stability against seismic activity. While the original wooden floorboards have long since vanished due to exposure, the stone shell remains standing.

Strategic embrasures are built into the walls at various levels. These narrow, slit-like openings allowed defenders to monitor the terrain and fire at potential threats while keeping themselves protected behind the thick stone. Exploring the interior shows how these defensive features were integrated into the basic living and survival spaces of the era.

Access and Visiting Tips

Gostibe is situated at a high altitude, and local weather patterns can change quickly. The road leading to the village is unpaved and requires a high-clearance vehicle, particularly after rainfall when the path can become muddy and rutted.

Upon arriving in the village, the tower is accessible via a short, manageable walk across local pastures. Please be aware that this is an unrestored monument. Exercise caution when moving near the base of the structure, do not attempt to climb the decaying interior walls, and respect the privacy of the local agricultural land surrounding the site.

Visitor Note: The area has no commercial infrastructure. There are no shops or cafes in Gostibe, so ensure you have sufficient water and food supplies before leaving the town of Kaspi.
