Kutaisi Annunciation Church

The Kutaisi Annunciation Church is a prominent architectural monument located in the historic heart of Kutaisi, functioning as a crucial spiritual center for the Imereti region. Constructed during the first half of the 19th century, this grand edifice features a distinct history, having transitioned across different Christian denominations before returning to the Georgian Orthodox Church. The building stands out in Kutaisi's urban landscape due to its large proportions, neoclassical design elements, and deliberate spatial placement within the old town.

The Royal Roots and Baroque-Classicist Architecture

Originally built on the site of an older Georgian church, the current stone structure was completed between 1823 and 1862. It initially served a Catholic parish established by Baroque-era missionaries and local merchants, which heavily influenced its stylistic design. Unlike traditional medieval Georgian cross-domed architecture, this cathedral reflects a transitional phase incorporating western European classicist and baroque styles adapted to local stone masonry. The facades feature arched windows, refined decorative pilasters, and clean geometric lines that match the 19th-century urban architecture of Kutaisi.

Inside, the expansive interior is illuminated by high windows that distribute light across the nave, emphasizing its architectural scale. Following its transfer to the Orthodox Church in 1989, a massive, meticulously carved wooden iconostasis was installed, which remains the central visual focus of the sanctuary today. The interior walls showcase a blend of traditional iconography and late-modern ecclesiastic art, representing the layered cultural heritage of the city.
