Dzigdziga Lake

Dzigdziga Lake, situated high in the mountains of Racha, is an unusual natural wonder near the village of Gebi. Located at an altitude of approximately 2,000 meters above sea level, the defining characteristic of this body of water is its unique movement. The local name "Dzigdziga" translates to "shaking" or "trembling," describing how the thick turf layer forming the lake's banks and sections of its surface vibrates noticeably when stepped on. This distinctive environmental feature, paired with the silent backdrop of alpine meadows and rocky ridges, gives the site an enigmatic atmosphere.

Geological Formation & Landscape

This high-mountain reservoir has a glacial origin and is primarily fed by deep underground springs and seasonal snowmelt from the surrounding peaks of the Greater Caucasus. Because of its sources, the water remains incredibly cold and crystal clear throughout the year. The lake is surrounded by sub-alpine vegetation and rich bog formations, which directly contribute to the floating turf phenomenon. Over centuries, layers of moss, roots, and organic matter have woven tightly together over sections of the water, creating a buoyant mat that moves under physical pressure.

Cultural Context & Ecology

For generations, the pasturelands around the water have served as summer grazing grounds for livestock from Gebi and nearby historical villages. Local herders have long been familiar with the undulating ground, passing down stories about the trembling earth of the high peaks. The surrounding territory hosts a pristine mountain ecosystem where birds of prey circle the ridges and rare alpine flora thrives.
