Makhata Mount & Iveria Cathedral

Rising prominently above the left bank of the Mtkvari River, Makhata Mount is a significant topographical and spiritual landmark in eastern Tbilisi. Offering sweeping, unobstructed views of both the dense urban grid of the capital and the expansive waters of the Tbilisi Sea, this elevated ridge serves as a modern center for Georgian Orthodox worship.

The Iveria Virgin Mary Cathedral

The crown jewel of the hill is the massive Iveria Virgin Mary Cathedral. Construction began in the 2010s, funded almost entirely by citizen donations, making it a highly symbolic project for the local population. The architectural style adheres to strict, classical Georgian Orthodox proportions, featuring a towering central dome and pale stone facades. Inside, the sheer scale of the nave is striking, and ongoing fresco work continues to add detail to the expansive interior walls.

Topography and Driving Access

Reaching the summit is straightforward for drivers. The main Makhata Mount Road is fully paved and features a steady, manageable incline suitable for any standard vehicle. Wide parking areas surround the cathedral complex, making it easy to stop and explore the grounds. For those interested in walking, unpaved trails connect the lower residential areas of Lotkini and Elia to the ridge, though these paths are steep and exposed to direct sunlight during summer months.

Panoramic Perspectives

The strategic elevation of Makhata provides a rare, dual-sided perspective. To the west, the entire city bowl of Tbilisi is visible, spanning from the Holy Trinity Cathedral below up to the Mtatsminda ridge on the opposite side of the valley. To the east, the landscape drops away toward the Tbilisi Reservoir, where the arid, rolling hills contrast sharply with the deep blue water.
