Duruji River
The Duruji River is a left tributary of the Alazani River, located in the Kakheti region of eastern Georgia. It originates on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus Range and flows past the town of Kvareli. The Duruji is infamous for its powerful and destructive mudflows (debris flows), which occur periodically following heavy rainfall or rapid snowmelt. These flows carry immense amounts of rocks, mud, and debris down from the mountains. The riverbed near Kvareli is filled with massive boulders brought down by past floods, serving as a stark reminder of the river's raw power. To protect the town, extensive embankments and dams have been constructed. Despite its dangerous nature, the Duruji valley is strikingly beautiful, and the river plays a role in the local ecosystem and agriculture when flowing normally.
