Debeda River
The Debeda, also known as the Debed, is a major river in the South Caucasus region. It originates in northern Armenia and flows northwards into the Kvemo Kartli region of Georgia, where it eventually joins the Khrami River, a right tributary of the Kura (Mtkvari). The river forms part of the natural border between Armenia and Georgia. The Debeda valley is characterized by deep canyons and historical significance, with numerous ancient monasteries and fortresses located along its course, particularly in Armenia (such as Haghpat and Sanahin). In Georgia, the river flows through a more open agricultural landscape. The Debeda is vital for irrigation in both countries, though it also faces environmental challenges related to industrial and agricultural runoff.
