Chkhari Dormition Church Ruins and Enclosure

Duration: 1–3 hours

The ruins of the Church of the Dormition stand on the edge of Chkhari village in Terjola municipality. What remains today are low stone walls, the footprint of a three-nave basilica, and a surrounding enclosure wall with traces of two auxiliary buildings.

Historical Context & Significance

The church is dated to the medieval period and is listed as an architectural monument. It was built of semi-worked stone and lime mortar and measured about 11.8 x 16.6 m. The site served as the main parish church for Chkhari and the enclosure suggests the complex had a defined sacred precinct. Today the structure is almost completely ruined, but the plan of the basilica and the line of the wall are still readable on the ground.

Architecture & Hidden Details to Look For

The building was a three-nave basilica, a type common in western Georgia. Look for:

  • The thick perimeter wall that encircles the church
  • Foundations of two small structures inside the enclosure, one interpreted as a bell tower
  • Masonry of local stone set in mortar, with no surviving decoration The simplicity of the masonry reflects local building traditions of Imereti.
