Chamligol Lake
Located in the Tsalka Municipality, near the village of Dashbashi, Chamligol is a high-mountain lake that serves as a tranquil escape for those seeking untouched nature. While it is often overshadowed by the nearby Dashbashi Canyon, this area offers a different, more contemplative experience. The lake is fed by underground springs and seasonal runoff, maintaining a relatively steady water level throughout the year. Its surroundings are characterized by typical Javakheti volcanic plateau landscapes—vast, open meadows and sparse alpine vegetation.
Geographical and Natural Context
Situated at an altitude of approximately 1,500 meters above sea level, the lake is a typical example of the volcanic-tectonic depressions common in this region. The water here is remarkably clear, though chilly even in the height of summer. The ecosystem surrounding the lake provides a habitat for various migratory birds, making it a point of interest for wildlife enthusiasts. Unlike the more tourist-heavy spots in Georgia, Chamligol remains relatively quiet. The terrain is largely flat, making it accessible for a light hike, though there are no marked trails, so a good sense of direction or a GPS map is advisable.
Practical Information and Tips
The best time to visit is from late May through early October. Outside of this window, the roads on the Tsalka plateau can become difficult due to heavy snow and fog. The travel time from Tbilisi is approximately 2 to 2.5 hours by car. Since public transport to the immediate vicinity is non-existent, private vehicle rental is the most practical option. A detail many visitors overlook is the traditional dry-stone walls built by local farmers; these structures are scattered throughout the surrounding fields and tell a quiet story of the region's agricultural history.
Recommendations
If you are planning a trip to Chamligol, consider combining it with a visit to the Dashbashi Canyon (only 20-30 minutes away) or the Paravani Lake, which is about an hour's drive further south. Be prepared for rapidly changing weather; even on a sunny day, the wind can pick up quickly, and temperatures can drop significantly. There are no facilities at the lake, so bring sufficient water and snacks. It is an ideal spot for a picnic, but please carry all your waste back with you to preserve the pristine state of the area.
